I see a lot of people are coming to this site looking for more information on Franciscan Eremitism, or Hermitism. When I was looking for information, it was very difficult to find this information, at first. I mean, St. Francis, was originally a sort of Hermit, at least in that he had no Monastery, but rather wondered around as a poor man, like Christ. But for rest, St. Francis would often retreat alone to a solitary place, and by doing this, it was said that he was more like Christ than any other man, the Povorello was.
I have heard that Thomas Merton wrote a book on Franciscan Eremitism. I have yet to read it, but I think that it was published in 1966. I don’t know the title. If you know the title, please leave a comment below.
St. Francis wrote a rule for hermitages. The general rule for Franciscans is to always spend SOME time in solitude. It is considered a spiritual essential.

There is a place and time for many things. More in some, less in others, and vice versa. Pax.
